Lim-Dul Superstar III - Not the Last Crusade

I recorded another video, actually a whole video series that will be continued in the future - it's quite boring but that won't stop me from posting it here. ^^

Unlike my previous gameplay videos this one has been recorded live, that is, I commented on my actions directly during gameplay - that's why the commentary isn't funny and as coherent as before. =)

A bit about the game itself - I've been playing it on and off for quite some time (2 years? I don't know.) and from a certain point on decided to post some bugs on Usenet, contact the author (he's a funny guy - you should read the comments in the source code or the in-game descriptions of certain things - almost Pratchett-esque), donate some money and stuff.

I explain what the game is in the video but for the deaf and mute among you (SonnY Black? :-D) it's a roguelike (turn-based dungeon crawling game) designed specifically for portable consoles - it started out as a GBA game, now it has spread onto the PSP, NDS and various other systems. The nice thing about it that it's intuitive, fast-paced (a run-through, if you manage to pull it off, is several hours long) and that it has some impressive surprises - things you wouldn't have expected to work so logically and realistically in a game seemingly so simple. Keep in mind that roguelikes are a very old genre of games without which we wouldn't have modern hack&slashers or cRPGs (Diablo, Dungeon Siege et al) - in their complexity they still surpass games that put a greater stress on graphics. How does e.g. ADOM, my favorite RL compare to this one? Well, it has a far more advanced core system but when it comes to all these "hidden surprises" and the gameplay dynamics POWDER is miles ahead of it - the source code has meanwhile surpassed the length of e.g. ADOM. 0_o

So, by all means check out the game, it's freeware and can be played on Windows (Mac OS X, Linux) as well - or play it on something portable, provided you have a flash memory adapter.

Ah - feel free to check out my new and improved channel page - now with more dinosaurs sporting rocket launchers (concept art for another cool game - Dinowaurs):

Subscribe to lengthen my e-peen and get updates on this epic (fail) video series. Some exclusive SpA-only info - I already recorded several follow-up videos and they contain a lot of dying and failing, so there's much fun to be had - who doesn't enjoy watching ME fail? :-P

Comments

Will check it later,

Will check it later, but I love these funky little games like good old Nethack. :D

POWDER > Nethack

Yeah, POWDER is cool if you like roguelikes. In my opinion it's better than Nethack because Nethack is an old-school roguelike and considering how this genre is old-school all by itself this makes the game doubly ancient. ^^ POWDER is a modern roguelike and plays like a missing link between roguelikes and games that built upon the concept (cRPGs, certain action-adventure games, hack&slash dungeon crawling games and so on) - which is good - it's still enjoyable for hardcore players and yet manages to be extremely accessible for newcomers. Funnily enough it's one of my most played games on the Nintendo DS and that's because I sometimes have only enough time to play for a couple of minutes and many commercial games don't provide you with the option to save on demand (only between levels etc.).

FOOBAR

You see a scroll of FOOBAR. Interestin :P I want to see more of that little grey dude. Not because I'm going to play this, I think I'm just too spoiled, but its nice to listen too and it tells a story. xD

New Video

There's a new video uploaded today. ^^ I'll upload one each day till the SpA Meeting on Thursday. =) In his newest video the little gray dude faces some epic challenges. However, don't get too attached to him because he'll die soon - and others will follow. ;-) This is the playlist I'm adding the videos to: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=DC7D5CDDCB06159B Also, you might always subscribe to my channel to get regular updates on the Youtube front page. ^^ http://www.youtube.com/user/limdul

It must be 5 years ago that I played any game of this kind, but if I'm really bored in the next time, I'll try it. ;)
